Lady of the Lake

There's a ghost story from near the old nieghborhood where I grew up in Dallas, Texas. Dozens of people have reported picking up a wet young lady in a white dress on White Rock Lake Drive. All have given similar reports.

The first known report of what's now refered to as the "lady of the lake" was made in the early 60's. A young couple taking a moonlight around the lake from Garland road back toward the old boathouse. They reported seeing a young white girl in a white dress alone, in the dark, walking beside the road. She was dripping wet although it was not raining out that night.

The young couple stopped to see if she needed help. She asked if they would give her a ride home. She said she lived in the big white house by the boathouses and kids offered to take her home. The young lady chatted with the wet passenger in the back seat as they road along White Rock Lake Drive. The young man glanced back in the rear view mirror at the beautiful, wet, young lady in the back seat several times as they drove along.

The couple pulled up the drive way of the that big old stucco house on the the hill behind the old boat houses. They stopped at the front step turned to say goodbye and the girl was gone. All they saw was a puddle of water on the back seat. The young girl was gone! They walked up to the house and rang concerned about the girl.

The servant that answered told the young couple that there were no young girls that lived in the house. But the couple were insistent. They described the wet young lady whom they had given a ride to. The astounded servant was visibly distraught. He admonishing the kids for playing such a cruel prank. There had been a young woman who lived there but she drowned in a boating accident on the lake several years earlier, and her family had never gotten over the loss.

There have been similar reports from cab drivers, cops, even a minister in one of the highland park churches. The story has been written up in the Dallas Morning News several times, usually around halloween. If you search back issues you can check it out.
