Laughing Matter

I was living in Monument Valley on the Navajo reservation in southeast Utah. It is an extremely rural location and there is very little to do there. My friends and I would just cruise aroundat night to keep ourselves occupied.

One night, my best friend and I were driving around in her car, talking about things and laughing (we never run out of things to talk about!). We were returning to my house at Gouldings after a cruise down to Oljato, and had just barely turned onto the little road that leads up the hill to the motel. I don't remember what we were talking about but it must have been QUITE hilarious because we were laughing hysterically.

Suddenly we both stopped laughing and looked at each other gravely. We had BOTH heard another person laughing with us, it sounded like a young man around our age. As if that wasn't quite odd enough, we could feel a presence of somebody sitting in the backseat, leaning forward between the two front seats. At first, we were scared stiff and didn't make a sound for a few seconds, and of course neither one of us dared to look back to see if anyone was there.... The next day, however, we were rather amused by the whole thing. This presence didn't seem negative or "evil", we figure that it was just the spirit of someone who died too young, trying to have a good time :-)
