Yeti

aka The Abominable Snowman

Yeti The Yeti is a large, hairy man-ape (much akin to Bigfoot) which inhabits the mountainous Himalaya region of Tibet and Nepal. Owing to its snowy environment, it is reputedly covered in dirty white-colored fur. Often in the West, primarily when humor is intended, the creature is referred to as the Abominable Snowman. The creature is also known to natives by other names, such as the Meh-Teh and the Migoi. (The different names may refer to differently-sized creatures; more precisely, 'Yeti' may refer to the largest of these.)

Like Bigfoot, the Yeti's existence originally became known to the Western world through the finding of its footprints. As early as 1921, Colonel C. K. Howard-Bury found a series of tracks while on an expedition to climb Mount Everest. The tracks were remarkable because they resembled bare human footprints; but they were found at a height of over 20,000 feet. Howard-Bury's native guides told him they belonged to the 'metch-kangmi,' or 'disgusting snowman' - and thus was the legend of the Abominable Snowman born.

A famous photograph of a Yeti print - shown alongside a ice-axe to indicate size - was taken by climber Eric Shipton in 1951, at approximately 22,000 feet. Few actual Yeti sightings have been reported; however, several skull caps, reputedly those of the elusive creature, have been put forward as authentic by the local villagers who hope to profit thereby.
